Polypropylene has a number of very useful characteristics including excellent chemical resistance and the fact that almost nothing will stick to it. However, this does mean that most joints involving polypropylene are mechanical in nature. This is the same with polypropylene sinks, which cannot be glued or bonded to any bench top using standard sealants or adhesives. For this reason the sinks are usually supplied with a gasket and, when under mounting sinks, we recommend the use of either an aluminium strengthening strip under the sink flange, or multiple screws directly through the flange. Any additional silicon used as a sealant may stick to the bench but will not stick to the polypropylene.

Polypropylene Sinks
Good all round chemical resistance. This product is very cost
effective where harsh chemicals and solvents are used. However, it
is easily damaged by hot objects and is not suitable for use in
certain applications.
In most school laboratories it is standard practice to teach pupils
to up end hot Bunsen burner tripods into laboratory sinks to remove
the heat and therefore reduce the possibility of accidental burns.
They are instructed to turn on the water before doing this, but in
our experience, this often doesn’t happen until after the tripod is
put into the sink. With polypropylene, this can result in holes and
a replacement sink is needed.
